Guiding teens toward healthy decisions
High school brings new opportunities, greater independence and important decisions. Teens may be balancing school, work, relationships, activities and plans for the future.
You can't make every decision for your teen, but you can help them think through choices, recognize risks and know where to turn for support. Open conversations and clear expectations can help them build skills for adulthood.
What Matters Most
Make mental health a priority. Talk about stress, loneliness, academic pressure and changes in mood. Help your teen understand that asking for help is a strength.
Encourage healthy relationships. Discuss respect, consent, boundaries, communication and how to recognize unhealthy or unsafe relationships.
Prepare for real-life decisions. Talk honestly about alcohol, vaping, cannabis and other substances. Discuss risks, peer pressure, safe transportation and ways to leave uncomfortable situations.
Stay involved in digital life. Talk about online pressure, privacy, image sharing, digital reputation and how social media can affect well-being.
Support independence. Help your teen practice problem-solving, managing responsibilities, speaking up for themselves and asking for help when needed.
Everyday Ways to Help
- Make time to talk without distractions.
- Ask for your teen's thoughts and listen to their point of view.
- Discuss safety plans for parties, rides and other social situations.
- Set clear expectations while allowing room for growing independence.
- Watch for major or lasting changes in mood, behavior or daily routines.
- Encourage your teen to connect with trusted adults and seek support when needed.
Try This Today
Make it clear that safety comes first.
Try saying, "If you ever feel unsafe or need help getting out of a situation, call me. We can talk about what happened later. First, I want you to be safe."
