Not In My House is a Parents Lead campaign that helps families set clear expectations, prevent underage drinking and substance use, and create safe, connected homes. The initiative is a community prevention effort with the primary goal of reducing youth social access to alcohol by raising awareness about social host liability and related misperceptions surrounding underage drinking
Why it Matters
- Teen brains are still under construction. Choices now can impact learning, memory, and mental health.
- Access matters. The majority of underage drinking starts with alcohol found at home or a friend’s home.
- Clear expectations work. Kids are far less likely to use when parents set and enforce no-use rules.
Who is a social host?
Any person, adult or minor, providing a location for underage drinking.
Social host refers to someone who hosts a party where alcohol is served on property they control. Social hosts can be held responsible for these parties if underage people are served, regardless of who furnishes the alcohol. Teen parties are a primary setting for underage drinking for high school and college students and high consumption of alcohol and binge drinking.
