Staying connected through the middle school years
The middle school years can bring big changes. Friendships may shift, emotions can feel stronger, and pressure from peers or online spaces may increase.
Your child is becoming more independent, but your support still matters. Listening, showing interest and talking openly about difficult topics can help your child feel understood and make safer choices.
What Matters Most
Support mental and emotional health. Help your child recognize stress, talk about feelings and find healthy ways to cope.
Build healthy relationships. Discuss respect, boundaries, bullying, exclusion and how to support friends who may be struggling.
Talk about online experiences. Ask about social media, group chats, gaming and online relationships. Discuss privacy, harmful content and what to do when something feels wrong.
Prepare for peer pressure. Talk about alcohol, vaping and other substances before your child faces difficult situations. Practice ways to say no, leave an uncomfortable situation or ask for help.
Keep trust at the center. Stay involved in your child's life while giving them room to grow. Make sure they know they can come to you without being judged.
Everyday Ways to Help
- Check in about how your child is feeling, not just what they are doing.
- Listen when they talk about friends, school or online experiences.
- Practice responses to uncomfortable situations.
- Set clear expectations for safety, technology and substance use.
- Watch for ongoing changes in mood, sleep, behavior or social connections.
- Encourage healthy activities, supportive friendships and time away from screens.
Try This Today
Start with curiosity, not a lecture.
Try asking, "What's something people your age deal with that adults might not understand?"
Listen to what your child shares. You don't have to solve the problem right away. Sometimes, being heard is a meaningful first step.
