7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) is a chemical found naturally in kratom leaves. It is also being sold separately in products marketed as tablets, gummies, powders and other forms.
Some products labeled as "7-OH" may contain concentrated amounts of this chemical, making them much stronger than traditional kratom products.
Why are parents hearing more about 7-OH?
7-OH products are increasingly appearing online, in smoke shops, convenience stores and other retail settings.
Bright packaging, sweet flavors and claims that products are "natural" or "safe" may make them appealing to young people.
However, a product being sold legally or marketed as natural does not mean it is safe.
How is 7-OH different from kratom?
While kratom contains many naturally occurring chemicals, 7-OH products may contain concentrated amounts of one of the stronger active compounds found in kratom.
This can mean:
- Stronger effects
- Greater risk of dependence
- Increased risk of misuse
- Higher potential for harmful effects
