Kratom can be difficult to recognize because it may look like other supplements, energy products or wellness products. Some young people may not realize the risks or may not consider kratom a substance that can cause harm.

Signs that someone may be using kratom can include:

Changes in behavior

  • Increased secrecy or hiding activities
  • Changes in friends or routines
  • Mood changes, irritability or unusual energy
  • Losing interest in activities they used to enjoy
  • Problems at school, work or home

Physical signs

  • Increased sleepiness or appearing unusually tired
  • Dizziness or confusion
  • Sweating more than usual
  • Nausea, vomiting or constipation
  • Changes in appetite or sleep patterns

Changes in belongings or online activity

  • Finding powders, capsules, gummies, liquids or unfamiliar supplements
  • Packages arriving from online sellers
  • Seeing kratom-related content, products or conversations online
  • Spending money on products without a clear explanation

These signs do not always mean someone is using kratom. They may be related to stress, mental health, changes in life circumstances or other challenges. The best way to know what is happening is to start a conversation.
