You Build Safe Spaces Where Kids Open Up

Whether it’s sports, church, arts, or community programs, you often see youth in their “real life” outside school—and that’s where trust builds.

What to Watch For

  • Pulling away from group participation or friendships
  • Changes in mood during meetings or activities
  • Expressions of hopelessness or low self-worth
  • Risk-taking or unsafe behavior
  • Sudden loss of interest in activities they enjoyed
  • Isolation during group time or events

How to Respond: Notice. Care. Connect.

Notice
Pay attention to changes in engagement and emotional tone.

Care
Start with presence, not pressure:

“I’m really glad you’re here. I noticed you’ve seemed a little off lately—do you want to talk?”

Connect
Help them find support beyond your setting:

  • Parents or caregivers
  • School counselor or trusted school staff
  • 988 (call or text anytime)
  • Faith leader or community mentor if appropriate

Youth Leader Reminder

You are not expected to be a therapist—your role is connection and referral.
