Goal
Build awareness of peer pressure, long-term consequences, and decision-making. Start introducing facts and social-emotional skills.
How to Start the Conversation
“October is Substance Use Prevention Month—a time to learn how to make smart choices for your health and future. Substances like drugs, vapes, or alcohol can mess with your brain, your body, and your goals. You have the power to say no, even when it’s hard. Choosing a healthy path now helps you stay in control of your future—whether that’s sports, college, music, or something else that matters to you.”
Key Messages
- “Substances like vaping, alcohol, or drugs can harm your brain and body—especially while you’re still growing.”
- “It’s normal to feel pressure from friends, but you can choose what’s right for you.”
- “You have the power to make healthy choices and support your friends in doing the same.”
How to talk about it
- Role-play refusal skills (“What would you say if…?”).
- Share short, real-world facts (not scare tactics).
- Encourage questions and normalize talking about tricky situations.
In-Class Learning Activity
Get creative and design a billboard to promote a positive prevention message that encourages healthy choices and raises awareness in your community. This is part of the Parents Lead Billboard Contest, where students have the chance to share their ideas with a wider audience and compete for the opportunity to have their design displayed in the community.
