Goal
Reinforce autonomy, real-world consequences, and long-term vision. Be honest, direct, and respectful.
How to Start the Conversation
“October is Substance Use Prevention Month. That’s not just a slogan—it’s a reminder that what you choose now can shape your future. Substance use isn’t just risky—it’s a shortcut to losing control over your goals, your health, and your relationships. You’re at a point in life where your decisions matter more than ever. Prevention means using your voice, your values, and your vision to stay on track—even when it's not easy.”
Key Messages
- “Your choices now shape your future—substance use can affect health, sports, jobs, and goals.”
- “Stress and pressure are real, but substances aren’t healthy solutions—there are better coping strategies.”
- “You deserve to make decisions that keep you in control of your life and your future.”
How to talk about it
- Connect to their goals (college, sports, careers).
- Discuss media influence and myths about substance use.
- Encourage peer leadership—students teaching students.
- Offer resources (school counselor, hotlines, youth groups) for those who need support.
In-Class Learning Activity
Get creative and design a billboard to promote a positive prevention message that encourages healthy choices and raises awareness in your community. This is part of the Parents Lead Billboard Contest, where students have the chance to share their ideas with a wider audience and compete for the opportunity to have their design displayed in the community.
