Sometimes parents have a difficult time figuring out how to have a conversation with their college student about alcohol. The first step is to have a mutual conversation. Do not ask your son or daughter question after question about alcohol use because this will feel like an interrogation. On the opposite end, do not only share your thoughts because that will become a lecture. Instead, strive to listen and share your opinions equally. During this conversation, your son or daughter may share information that could make you angry, but remain calm and respectful. Harsh reactions can cause your son or daughter to disassociate from the conversation, making communication harder the next time. Use “I” statements when sharing information, such as “I feel scared when you tell me you have been drinking.” Remember that not discussing everything you had hoped is OK. You always can go back and finish the conversation later. Even having part of the conversation could be very beneficial for your son or daughter.
