North Dakota ranks among the highest in the nation for binge drinking. The mission of the Parents LEAD Program is to encourage parents to Listen, Educate And Discuss with their kids the dangers and consequences of underage drinking, warning signs and proper reactions to overconsumption/alcohol poisoning. We need your support.
You can help kids by educating their parents/guardians on the dangers and consequences of underage drinking and overconsumption. We invite educators statewide (grades 7-12) to participate in the Ask Me Promotion. This promotion is free and requires minimal time and faculty training.
It's Easy and Here's How
Step One
Designate a promotion coordinator within your school. The coordinator is responsible for distributing promotional materials and instructions to the other participating educators.
Step Two
Each promotional toolkit contains Ask Me buttons. Participating educators are to wear a button throughout parent/teacher conferences.
Step Three
During parent/teacher conferences, if a parent/guardian asks an educator, "What does your button mean?" the educator is to hand the individual(s) an educational flip card containing statistics and information on the dangers and consequences of underage drinking, etc. The card also directs the recipient to the program Web site containing additional information on how to talk to kids about underage drinking, alcohol poisoning, etc.
Step Four
During the course of parent/teacher conferences, educators are asked to track the number of inquiries received on an educator tally sheet provided in the toolkit. Upon conclusion of conferences, they are asked to turn in their completed sheets to the designated promotion coordinator. The information is then sent to the Parents LEAD Program Office and compiled. The educators making the most contacts will be awarded prizes. (Note: School size, number of students, etc. will be taken into consideration enabling all educators equal opportunity to win prizes.)
Additional promotional/educational materials such as posters, brochures, etc. are available upon request to enhance local activities.
Young people rank parents among the top influences for not using alcohol. Parent/teacher conferences provide an "ideal" opportunity to spark discussion and distribute educational materials at a time when parents are focusing on their kids.
If you are interested in participating, submit the form below for implementation at your next parent/teacher conferences or call the Parents LEAD Program Office at 701-225-4677.
